Lawson is always trying to be cool. The boy wants to be a teenager so bad he can't stand it. Each school day he says, "Dad, can you make my hair look cool?". Or when he's getting dressed it's, "Dad, I don't want to wear anything dorky, I want something cool". For all the coolness he tries to exude, he does things like this (taking his "Buddy" for a ride) which reassures us that he's still our little boy.
